Summary of Rules Changes for 2011-12

  • Change rule LT 20. "In writing the solution, the player may use one cube from Resources." The change is from "must" to "may."
  • Change rule LT 22 A. "It may not be a contraction, hyphenated word, or a proper noun. It may not contain an apostrophe."
  • In the list of Demands, Middle/JrSr, Letter Q. Clarify the definition of a direct quote when it is called as a demand. Add to the definition: "For the purpose of the game, a direct quote needs to be a complete thought with a subject and a verb and function as a noun clause."
  • Remove the letters N-V, N-V-N, N-V-N-N and similar references from all Order of Play Sheets, Dictionary of Terms, Judges Manual, etc.
  • Make a change on the Scoring Chart. Letter B – change Neutral to 2 points.
  • World Events
    • Current Events: 2011 only
    • Theme: The Supreme Court. The reference list and subtopics have been posted on the AGLOA website for download.
    • The reference round has been abolished. Instead, two lightning rounds will be played.
  • Presidents
    • The theme for all divisions for 2011-12 Presidents is First Ladies.
    • The Elementary/Middle range will be 1-24.
    • Additionally, Jr/Sr covers American Leaders Group 3 - Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, John Marshall, Daniel Webster, Henry Clay, and William Lloyd Garrison.
  • Propaganda
    • The sections for 2011-12 are A, B, C, and F.
    • Players may not begin to circle their answers until AFTER the reader has
      completed the second reading of the example.

  • Equations/On-Sets
  • Both Games

    • A scoring chart will be printed on the back of the variation sheet for each division.
    • When a player picks up the challenge block but does not state a valid challenge, penalize the player one point and continue play. (Previously, the Stalling Rule was applied and the offender had to take two -1s to avoid challenging.)

    Equations Only

    • For newer games, ^ replaces * on the cubes. ^ inherits all the properties of * including the ambiguity as to sideways and upside-down. A ^ cube may NOT be placed sideways or upside-down in the Goal.
    • Middle Division: The Remainder variation, a perennial in Elementary as of last year, is played in 2011-12 as an even variation in Middle.
    • Senior Division: With √= i, 3+2√ defaults to 3+(2i). Same for 3-2√, 3÷2√, 3*2√, etc.
