Judges Corner for July 2008
Moving on to the Next Shake
A tricky situation in a cube game is whether or not players can continue the current shake or start the next shake while awaiting a final ruling in a disputed situation. The rule of thumb is this:
If the ruling affects only scoring, players may proceed while the judges agree on a final ruling on the issue in dispute.
Examples of situations where players may proceed
- Judges must decide whether a player loses a one-point penalty.
- The correctness of a Solution must be finalized. While it is true that players are "playing in the dark" in that they don't know the final scores of the disputed shake and therefore aren't sure who is leading the match, they should start the next shake rather than continue to sit and wait for the final judgment.
Examples of situations where players may NOT proceed
- Whether a cube was played to Permitted or Forbidden is in question.
- A player has challenged. However, the conditions under which the challenge was issued are under dispute.
- Whether or not the Goal stands as set is in dispute.
