1-12:
The first time I ran for president, no candidate received a majority of
the Electoral Votes although I had more than anyone. So the House of Representatives
voted as required by the Constitution. Henry Clay, despite
the fact that my opponent did not receive a single popular vote in Clay's
home state of Kentucky, ignored his state legislature's instructions and
gave his state's votes to my predecessor, which was enough to send him
to the White House.
13-24:
After serving one term as president, I returned home following the inauguration
of my successor, who was from the same political party as me. My train
collided with another passenger train. Two people were killed and 20 injured,
but I was only shaken up. Back in private life, I was soon forgotten by
most of the public.
25-33:
When I was 37, a London magazine called me "a wizard of finance."
At 40, I owned a share of mines and oil fields in more than seven countries.
I first worked for the Federal government in the administration of a president
of the opposite party from mine.
34-43:
According to some commentators, my domestic program resembled those of
my Democratic predecessors. My foreign policy emphasized containing Communism
as it tried to spread to other nations. As part of that plan, I sent a
small group of military advisors to a little-known country called Vietnam.
Little did I know what grief would result for the U.S. in that small nation
in the years to come.
