Presidents

1-12:
In my last year in the White House, Congress passed what came to be known
as the Tariff of Abominations. I supported higher tariffs but my political
opponents amanded my original bill to include much higher taxes on imported
raw materials. This was their attempt to force legislators from my section
of the country to vote against it. However, the bill passed anyway, and
consumer prices for many goods jumped considerably. None of this helped
my chances for reelection.
13-24:
As governor, I vetoed numerous bills intended to help the Tammany Hall
machine. I paid a 32-year-old Polish immigrant $150 to take my place in
the Civil War. This was perfectly legal.
25-33:

without an accent." Over a two-year period, I went from being a political
